960 Grid System

I started building a site with the 960 grid system today. I’m a real fan. It’s not the first time I’ve used it – but it is the first time I’ve used it to knock up a quick presentation and it just reminded me how useful it is to have all your measurements to hand – no thinking required once you understand the grid – just concentrate on how you want your site to look and away you go.

The site we’re working on will be addressing the second hand gold market – it’s probably a lucrative market right now – but the interesting thing for us was to strike a balance for the clients. They want a reasonably nice looking site – after all they have been doing what they do for over 20 years – but the rider is that this market is actually quite tacky – most of the sites out there are not nicely presented and don’t particularly serve the customers – they’re mostly like an Argos catalogue (if you know what that is) – and that probably sells!

We decided that a highly visible bit of flash code in a well presented site would do the job – getting the attention of the clients customers themselves and keep the high ground for the clients. We then will drive the viewer down the page quickly picking up all the strong benefits of doing business with this reputable company in a somewhat dodgy looking market place.

I’ll let you know how it goes…
